February 1 - 2 Camp Information

1/27/2014

We are just a few short (but VERY COLD) days away from our second camp of the season.  This camp will allow us to continue to work on basics and fundamentals taught at the January camp, as well as work with new music for our 2014 Field Show, "As the Darkness Clears Away"!

The camp will begin at 2:00 on Saturday with all LVW members gathering in the auditorium for opening announcements and an overview of the weekend's rehearsal.  Please plan on arriving at least 15 to 20 minutes early.  We will conclude all of our activities by 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon. Please check with your school’s director/LVW coordinator for travel plans to and from the rehearsal.

We are still seeking new members for 2014!  It is not too late to join, so members are strongly encouraged to bring someone new to the February camp, even if the new students are not sure if they will join for this summer.  There is no obligation to attend camp, and there is no cost to attend the camp.

Please RSVP for the rehearsal, even if you are unable to attend but intend to participate in 2014.  The RSVP is for all who will attend the camp, including registered members, non-registered or new members, staff, and parent helpers.  The RSVP form is found on the LVW website's homepage at www.lutheranvanguard.org.  Please note that there is a new question for students who ride the Shoreland bus.  We want to know who is riding, and where you will be picked up.

If you have not done so yet, please PRINT, FILL OUT, and BRING ALONG to the February Camp the Medical, Permission, and Code of Conduct Forms.  You may also mail them to FVL.  They will be collected when the students register for camp as they arrive.  Please take care of this very important information.

A Financial Assistance Form and information has also been posted to the Membership Info page.  If you are in need of assistance, please check that information.  We would like all financial assistance requests to be sent to us by February 28.

Pack a brown-bag supper for Saturday evening. Sunday breakfast/lunch will be provided by LVW. You will not need to bring any money for the meals - they are included in your fees for the year. There will be lemonade/Gatorade/water available. We prefer that you do not drink soda (pop) during LVW rehearsals.

We will be attending Saturday evening worship at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church. Casual clothes are acceptable for this worship service.

You will need to pack an overnight bag with a change of clothes, overnight gear (Sleeping bag/blanket/pillow/air mattress/etc.), personal items (towel, soap/shampoo, deodorant, etc). We will be sleeping overnight at FVL.  It may be a bit chilly overnight at FVL, so an extra blanket may be a good idea.

For marching rehearsals, you will need to have comfortable shorts or sweats. Please don’t wear “jeans” for marching/visual rehearsals. You will also need a pair of tennis shoes for use on the gym floor.  You may also want to bring a water bottle.

Don’t forget your instrument and music! If you will be using an LVW instrument (horn, baritone/euphonium, tuba), you will need to bring your own mouthpiece. Reed players, please make sure you have a few working reeds for the rehearsal.

If this is your first rehearsal for 2014, you will be given your music and other LVW equipment when you arrive.

Check back to this page occasionally. There may be more updates before the weekend.

See you soon!

LVW is Going Camping!

1/17/2014

LVW is planning a really fun and unique experience as part of our 2014 tour, and we wanted to let you know about it. On Tuesday, July 8 on our way to Traverse City for the National Cherry Festival, we will be spending one night at a privately-owned camp ground on the shores of beautiful Lake Huron, and within sight of the Mackinac Bridge.

We will be sleeping in tents, and the kids seem really excited about it! There are more than 200 acres of woods to explore, a mile of incredible sand beach for swimming, an in-ground heated pool, basketball courts, badminton, and all kinds of other fun things to do. We will also have a cookout that night over open fires, and a Bible devotion under the stars later in the evening. We really think this is going to be a great night for the band. Then, on Tuesday we will spend part of the day at Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park (located within walking distance of the camp ground) where the kids can enjoy zip lines, a climbing wall, a walk through the tree tops on the Forest Canopy Bridge, or adventure to the top of the five-story Treetop Discovery Tower.

And this might be the coolest thing of all: the owners of the camp ground want Lutheran Vanguard to help them celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a parade march through the camp ground! This will be one of the most unique things the band has ever done, marching along the shores of a Great Lake under towering pines...and the kids we've talked to about it are very excited for this!

So, if you plan on traveling with the band to Traverse City and want to stay at the camp ground, you should make reservations soon as spots fill up very quickly. Use the information below for details on the grounds and how to book a site (make sure to mention that you're part of the Lutheran Vanguard group).

2014 is going to be our best season ever, and we can't wait!
