Thursday, July 3
LVW will be kicking off the celebration for our Nation's Birthday with the Menomonee Falls Independence Day Parade on Wednesday, July 3. The parade start time is 7:00 PM.  LVW is #11 in this parade.  Following the parade, LVW will be presenting its 2014 field show in an exhibition performance at the Menomonee Falls HS football field prior to the Fireworks show!

Friday, July 4
We begin the birthday celebration in Cedarburg with a 10:00 AM start to the Cedarburg Hometown Parade!  If you have not been to Cedarburg before, you are in for a real treat!  Cedarburg is a beautiful town with lots of specialty shops, dining, and several winery tours.  You might even want to consider visiting Cedarburg on July 3 before the Menomonee Falls Parade, as there won't be time to take it all in on July 4 if you want to catch LVW in the other parades.

Cedarburg’s annual 4th of July Hometown Celebration is ready to rock ‘n roll on Friday, 4th of July. Ranked as the largest celebration of its kind in southeastern Wisconsin, and coordinated by the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce, this celebration draws an estimated 10,000 spectators to the downtown Cedarburg Historic District.

The roughly two-hour parade, noted for showcasing award-winning drum & bugle corps and bands, will roll out from Firemen’s Park at 10 a.m. and move south along Washington Avenue, ending at the Spring Street intersection. This year, the Madison Scouts and Pioneer will delight the crowds with their musical prowess during the parade, and Madison Scouts will delight everyone with a concert in the park after the parade, starting around 1pm.

Come hungry and take advantage of the daylong picnic in Cedar Creek Park provided by the Cedarburg Lions. Service begins at noon, and an abundance of grilled foods and summertime beverages will be served up with a smile. While parents relax with friends and family, kids are invited to seek out clowns under the trees and get their faces painted red, white and blue. As in years past, the annual patriotic performance by the Cedarburg Civic Band will take place at 8 p.m., followed by a spectacular firework display at dusk.  At this time, LVW is planning on returning to Cedarburg for the evening fireworks.

We then perform in the New Berlin Fourth of July Parade, starting at 1:00 PM.  The parade starts at the corner of Coffee Road and National Avenue and ends at Malone Park (approximately 1 mile west of Moorland Road).  New Berlin also has a community July 4 Festival, which takes place at Malone Park near the end of the parade route.

Finally, we head to the Hales Corners Fourth of July Parade, which begins at 4:00 PM.  LVW is #23 in this parade.  The parade route begins at the corner of Forest Home Avenue and W Grange Avenue and proceeds southwest along Forest Home to Kelm Road, which is just a bit west of Hwy 100 (AKA HWY 45 or 108th Street).  Not to be outdone by Cedarburg and New Berlin, Hales Corners also has a community celebration for the Fourth of July, and you can see what is happening there by clicking on the link below.

Whitewater Classic Ticket Information

LVW, along with the Sound of Sun Prairie and the Shadow Armada from Oregon will be performing in exhibition at the DCI show in Whitewater on Saturday, July 5.  This show is one of only a handful of DCI shows that will be held in Wisconsin this year. Beautiful Perkins Stadium, on the campus of UW-Whitewater, will be the setting.  This stadium was host to the very first Drum Corps International Championship back in 1972, and has continued to be an important stop for DCI over the years.  It will be an honor and a privilege for our band to march on the field and join many of DCI's top performing corps in one of the best shows in the entire Midwest this summer!

The order for the MACBDA bands in Exhibition that night will be as follows (times approximate):

LVW - 6:15 PM
Sound of Sun Prairie - 6:30 PM
Shadow Armada - 6:45 PM

National Anthem - 7:00 PM

The DCI portion of the show begins at 7:08 PM

Racine Scouts - Racine, WI
Kilties - Racine, WI
Pioneer - Milwaukee, WI
Jersey Surf - Camden County, NJ
Blue Stars - LaCrosse, WI
Madison Scouts - Madison, WI
Blue Devils - Concord, CA

More information about the show can be found on the DCI show's website at  WHITEWATER CLASSIC.

I will order tickets for this show under an LVW group.  In doing so we will save $15 - 25 off the price of each ticket.  I will take care of ordering those tickets so we will have our own section of LVW Groupies!  If you would like a ticket, go to the Google Form at LVW TICKET ORDER FORM.  Once there you will find a very short form with more information and just a few questions to fill out.

So that I can be assured of getting the group rate and good tickets for the show, you MUST fill out the Google Form by Wednesday, June 25.  After that time, the form will be disabled and you will be on your own to order tickets.

If you have questions, contact me at jneujahr@fvlhs.org.

I want to first congratulate everyone for a job well done this past week!  Thanks to our army of volunteers support staff for making sure the kids were fed (very well, I might add!), to our uniform crew for helping them look awesome, to those who walked with the band on the parade routes, and to our equipment crew who loaded and unloaded the truck several times in the past few days.  Without our support staff, our members would not be able to accomplish the things they do.

Thanks also to our director staff for their attention to detail and providing our kids with excellent instruction!  In just a few short days, they steadily brought the band from a collection of inexperienced students from many schools to the entertaining group we know as Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin!  The transformation is truly remarkable, and will continue throughout the season in a forward direction.

Last, but certainly not least, thanks go to the members of LVW!  Their focus and energy to learn was outstanding.  It really is amazing to see how quickly they can improve!  The Friday parade in Brillion was a good beginning - a little tentative and manageable, but a good start.  The band really started to perform on Saturday and Sunday with entertaining performances that left the audience cheering for more!  It will be a great summer, and the improvement from now until July 19 will be extraordinary!

This week will be a rehearsal week as we begin to focus more on the field show.  The drill for the first movement was learned this past week, but we have not yet played music on the field.  So this week is vitally important to the rest of the summer, as this will be the last dedicated rehearsal week with several days in a row to learn and improve the show.

Rehearsal will begin on Wednesday at 2:00 PM.  Note the later starting time, as FVL is hosting the WELS Northern Wisconsin District Convention on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.  The rehearsal camp will conclude at 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoon.

All students should bring a BAG SUPPER for Wednesday night.  We will be staying in host homes on Wednesday and Thursday night, and will stay at FVL on Friday night.  Students should remember to pack everything needed for four days of camp.  The packing list for this past week will be a good reference for this week as well, although members will not need to bring performance apparel and shoes since there are no performances this week.

Students should also make sure to take care of themselves before returning to camp.  They were instructed to drink plenty of water so they can be fully hydrated.  It will be much warmer this week than it was this past week, and more humid as well. Students should also remember especially to bring sunscreen (at least SPF 30), sunglasses, and hats as we will be spending the majority of our time outside on the soccer field.

During the trip to Michigan in July, we will be spending time at the Mill Creek Discovery Park.  The park has many activities, including a zip line, climbing wall, and ropes course.  Due to the possible risk involved with these attractions, the adventure park requires a waiver of liability to be signed and dated by the student and the parent.  We gave each LVW member a form to bring home.  Some have already returned them, but they should be brought back this week to rehearsal so we can file them and make sure that we have forms for all members.  If your son or daughter lost the form, or if they were absent when the forms were handed out, they are also available at this link: Mill Creek Discovery Park Waiver of Liability Form.

Please remember that we would like all fees to be paid by this time.  If special arrangements need to be made, please contact James Neujahr at jneujahr@fvlhs.org.

Many thanks to the students who are participating in our American Flag and Banner detail!  So that we are prepared for any emergency that may come up as we travel and perform in parades, we would like you to fill out the LVW Medical Form.  Just click the link to access the form, print it and fill it out.  Note that the form is two pages long.  It should be returned to us before the next parade, which will be Saturday, June 28.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me at the above address (for James Neujahr)..

Thanks all!
