Food Donations for LVW

5/31/2013

Hello Everyone!
Band Camp is just around the corner, and as you prepare for the summer season, Tara Schlafer and Holly Kubek wanted to contact you regarding the food needs for the summer.

Like last year, we are going to ask for donations per family.  Please bring what you feel you are able to donate, to the first day of band camp. We hope there is something on this list that will work out for everyone; time wise and money wise.
Your donations of these staple items help to offset the cost of food and allow Tara and I to do some special/extra things with the food menu.  Your donations may also help offset our "onsite @ FVL/band camp" food costs so that when the band goes out on tour we maybe able to offer more options.

Volunteers are also needed!  If you feel you cannot donate items, please consider donating your time.  We have many volunteers needs from kitchen to chaperone to snack service to clean up to truck driving, all to support our kids and the tremendous effort they put into the LVW Season.  We cannot do this program without your donations of time and/or items.  THANK YOU!

There is a volunteer web calendar posted on the LVW Website... it will be your one stop volunteer spot.  The kitchen crew needs are noted there.  Please note, start times are just an estimate, if you can make any time over the meal, please sign up and then let us know your exact arrival time.  You can also contact Holly via e-mail... hkubek@new.rr.com or via phone.... 920-574-7721 (cell).
Thank you to those folks who have already contacted me!  We are off to a great start!

We did just learned that our milk/dairy supplier, who has generously donated milk, cheese, sour cream, etc. for the past many number of years, was unable to donate this season.  Their fund raising season last year, did not go as well, due to the economy.  So we are looking for any leads on possible reduced dairy products or donations.  If you know of a farmer or other contacts that might be able to help us out... please let me know!  We appreciate any leads you may have.

Here is the list of items.... bring 1 or bring as many as you feel you can:
any kind of candy bars regular or small sizes: especially  Snickers, Hershey plain chocolate, Reeces Peanut Butter Cups, but we'll eat anything!
      marshmallows
chocolate chips  peanut butter chips    butterscotch chips
      m & m
      graham crackers
      oreo cookies

      granola
      spaghetti sauce
      alfredo sauce
      parmesean cheese

any flavor of pudding, boxes or large #10 cans
      all flavors of powdered Gatorade
any types of powdered lemon ade ( no sugar free items please)
whole turkeys... cooked and deboned or just bring to FVL and we'll bake and debone them... at least 5 turkeys, but we can always use more

dried fruits, craisin, blueberries, cherries  the kids loved this on the salad bar and in oatmeal
bacon - this can be expensive... kids love the bacon and even just a 1lb. donation would be appreciated, if 20 people donated 1 lb. we would have 20Lbs!!
      real bacon bits
      shredded cheese
      cottage cheese
      string cheese

watermelons, grapes, or strawberries (if you happen to go pick strawberries, please pick a flat for LVW- mmmm strawberry shortcake! )

We would also gladly accept gift cards to Woodman's, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Festival or other.
Thank you again! Please contact Holly or Tara for any questions, concerns, or recipes to share!!

Volunteers and Chaperons - Here we GO!

5/30/2013

Hello Volunteers, and welcome to the 2013 Lutheran Vanguard Season!

It is with a great deal of excitement that we begin this 36th year of LVW. The kids are ready, the schedule is set and it’s going to be another great year of parades and field shows, fun and friendship, and Letting Our Light Shine!

As always, LVW runs on an incredible and talented group of volunteers…just like you! Parents, grandparents, friends…you’re all welcome to be a part of this amazing experience. For the first time this year, we’re using a new website called Volunteer Spot to sign up volunteers. I think you’ll find the site easy to use and it’s going to make organizing a large group much easier.

You can sign up to volunteer in a number of different capacities in one of three ways:

*On FaceBook at the LVW site, found HERE

*By following these simple instructions:

Please sign up for LVW 2013 Summer Season - here's how it works in 3 easy steps:

   1. Click this link to go to our invitation page on VOLUNTEER SPOT
   2. Enter your email address: (You will NOT need to register an account on VolunteerSpot)
   3. Sign up! Choose your spots - VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Note: VolunteerSpot does not share your email address with anyone. If you prefer not to use your email address, please contact me and I can sign you up manually.

LVW is a pretty dynamic group, which means that some of the times and responsibilities might need to be modified, but Volunteer Spot will send you an email reminder of any changes (an example might be if you plan on traveling with the band on tour…some of the start times listed will be different for you than for a volunteer just coming in for the day). Also, each event is listed separately (breakfast, lunch, and dinner slots are listed as separate opportunities) so be sure to sign up multiple times for the slots you want!

There are all kinds of activities and volunteer opportunities you can sign up for, and your help is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the Kitchen Crew you can call Holly Kubek at (920) 574-7721 or email her at hkubek@new.rr.com. For questions on any other volunteer opportunities you can call Tony Kubek at (920) 734-5251 or email him at ackubek@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for your willingness to help! We truly couldn’t do it without you, and we know you’re going to love it!

Important Band Camp Information:
Dates: Tuesday, June 4 – Saturday, June 8
Beginning time: 10:00 AM on Tuesday (arrive by 9:45)
Place: All camp activities will take place at FVL in Appleton, with parades in Brillion (Friday), and Appleton (Saturday)

Meals:
If any parents would like to help with meals at band camp, please contact Holly Kubek at hkubek@new.rr.com or Tara Schlafer at tara@schlafer.name.  This is a great opportunity for grandparents, aunts and uncles, and brothers and sisters as well!

For band camp, please bring your own bag lunch for Tuesday, June 4. All other meals along with all beverages will be provided during camp. Please bring something healthy, such as a sandwich, fresh fruit/vegetables in addition to chips/dessert items. LVW will provide beverages for the meal.

We have found from past experience that the best liquids to drink at rehearsals are products such as Gatorade, PowerAde, lemonade and other fruit juices, or plain cold water. Please do not bring POP (soda) to drink on rehearsal days for your lunch.

Forms and payments:
Remember that all forms must be turned in at band camp. Most forms are in, but a few remain “somewhere out there.” Just as a reminder to all, if the medical and permission forms are not in our possession, that member will not be allowed to travel with the band to any performance. The forms are all available on the bands’ website at www.lutheranvanguard.org. There is a link right on the home page. Please also remember that fees for the summer should be paid by the start of band camp.

If we are missing your forms, an email will be sent prior to Band Camp to let you know.

Camp schedule:
Tuesday,June 4 - 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM
Wednesday,June 5 - 8:30 AM until 9:00 PM
Thursday,June 6 - 8:30 AM until 9:00 PM
Friday,June 7 - 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Brillion Electric Parade 9:00 P.M.

Saturday, June 8 - 8:30  - 11:00 AM

Appleton Flag Day Parade 2:00 P.M. LVW is #79 out of approximately 100 units in the parade

Dismissal will be from FVL after the parade.  We will provide a light meal after changing out of uniform.  We should be done by about 4:30 or 5:00 PM.

Performances:
Our first performance of the year will be on Friday, June 7, when LVW will travel to Brillion to participate in the Brillion Electric Parade. The parade will begin at 9:00 PM. A few words of caution for this parade: bring mosquito repellent, rain slickers and umbrellas (if past years are any indication of what we can expect)! The parade travels right down the middle of town on Main Street (South end and travels North) through the business district. As of this writing, LVW’s position in the parade is not known.

Our next performance of the 2013 season is Saturday, June 8, in the 63rd Annual Appleton Flag Day Parade, the “largest and oldest Flag Day Parade in the United States.” This parade begins at 2:00. The route begins at the corner of Wisconsin  Avenue and Oneida Street, travels West on Wisconsin to State Street where it turns South. It continues on State Street to College Avenue, and travels East to Union Street where the parade ends. It will again be broadcast live by WFRV TV - Channel 5. The TV area will be near the corner of Wisconsin and Superior Streets.  If you are wondering, the Appleton parade is not competitive, so there is no “judging area” where you can all gather. However, as in past years, there will be a reviewing stand where many, MANY LVW parents and fans like to congregate. The stand is in the block just before the end of the parade at 321 E College Avenue. More information can be found at the parade's website.

Checkout Procedures for the end of Band Camp
(We will use these procedures each and every time LVW disbands following a performance).

If you are going to be picked up following the parade, and are not returning on the bus or with your school’s transportation, the following procedures MUST be followed:
 Your parents must pick you up where we are changing out of uniform. For this weekend, that will be on Saturday, at Fox Valley Lutheran HS. If you are picking up your child at FVL, you must be there when the band is ready to leave. If you are not there when the band is ready to leave, your child will travel home with your school's designated transportation.
 Your parents must check you out with the attendance chaperon from your bus or your director. This must be done with you and your parent present.
 If your parents are not there when the band is ready to leave, you will travel with your school's designated transportation. We leave no one behind – EVER!
 You may not ride home with anyone else other than your parents UNLESS you have a written permission signed by your parents, and UNLESS that written permission is put into our hands. DON’T FORGET THE NOTE AT HOME, because there are NO EXCEPTIONS!

What to bring with you to band camp:
1. Instrument and/or other necessary equipment
2. All music and warm-ups—memorized!
3. Enough comfortable clothing for five days of camp, especially comfortable shoes!! (Note again that no sandals of any kind will be allowed for any marching or music rehearsals) Bring clothes for very warm or cool weather.
4. Sunscreen or sunblock – and be sure to use it! A WIDE-BRIMMED hat/baseball cap is also a MUST. We will be on a field for much of camp.
5. A one gallon (or other large size) water jug LABLED WITH YOUR NAME
6. Reeds, valve oil, slide grease, cork grease, etc.
7. A spiral-bound dot book (notebook – 3x5 or 4x6 size) with shoestring for writing drill and a pen or pencil
8. Tennis shoes for use in the gymnasiums—the shoes used outside may not be allowed on the gym floors if they are too dirty.
9. Frisbees, cards, chess sets, etc. for any free time that you MIGHT have (NOTE: Frisbees and balls or any other throwing device will not be used at any time inside any building – this rule applies to the entire summer.)
10. Your black marching shoes
11. BLACK SOCKS for all members, including guard
12. Black Spandex or Bike shorts for under your uniform
13. 2 BLACK T-SHIRTS – These will be given to you at band camp if you have not received one already. They will be $7.50 each. You may pay for them at camp, or the cost will be added to your next statement. Please do not buy t-shirts on your own. We are buying these from a supplier so they are all the same.
14. Anything else that you will need for your marching instrument, equipment, uniform, and performance
15. LOTS OF ENTHUSIASM AND A STRONG DESIRE TO LEARN!!
Color guard members are to make sure that you have all of the needed uniform items, which include black socks, black spandex shorts and black T-shirts (which you will pick up at camp), and your black shoes.

Uniforms:
We will be wearing our LVW uniforms for all performances this summer. These uniforms become the visual representation of who and what we are. Wear your uniform with pride and respect, and take care of it in the same way! Guidelines on how to take proper care of your new uniform will be given to you during band camp.
All wind and percussion players are to bring along black shoes, black socks, and black shorts as outlined above. As in past years, all wind players are responsible for purchasing and washing their own pair of gloves. Some members have already been given a pair of practice gloves. If not, you will get them at camp. Everyone will also be given a pair of black gloves, which will be worn with the uniform. The first pair will be free. For all extra gloves that you may need for the summer, the cost will be $3.00 per pair. Be sure to have your money with you. It is a good idea to purchase an extra pair, just in case. Also, for extended weekend trips with several performances, the second pair will come in very handy. If anyone loses their gloves, you must purchase a new pair. Take care of this very visible part of your uniform!

Special notes on your appearance for our performances:
1. No jewelry is to be worn during performances. This includes rings and watches. Ladies may wear earring posts only if they are covered by Band-Aid material. If your ears were not already pierced, it would be wise to wait until after our season is done!
2. Guys are allowed to wear earrings for rehearsals or other non-performance times while with the band. The following guidelines apply to guys – you are permitted to wear one post or stud earring per ear. You are not permitted to wear dangling or hoop earrings, or more than one earring per ear lobe.
3. Hair must be worn back. There are to be no bangs allowed to hang down in front, or curls down the side. If the hair reaches over the collar of the uniform, it must be worn under the hat, either pinned up or contained in a hair net. This includes gentlemen whose hair is long and/or unkempt.  Gentlemen, it is best if your hair is cut short for the summer.
4. Gentlemen must be clean-shaven for all performances.

Attire when with the band:
As we head into the summer season, we would like to remind you to use good taste and judgement in your choice of what to wear. Remember that we are all witnesses for our Savior, even in rehearsals! Please follow these guidelines:
1. Extremely short shorts, bare midriffs, nearly-bare midriffs (if your tummy shows when you stretch up), spaghetti-strap tank-tops, or the very loose-fitting sleeveless-style tops are not acceptable for any of our members, male or female, as these could detract from the image and purpose of our band, and could possibly prove to be a stumbling block for others.
2. Gentlemen must wear a shirt at all times, for the same reasons as in #1.
3. Shirts, caps, or other clothing with logos of rock groups, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, or objectionable slogans are not to be worn, as they detract from the image and purpose of our band.
4. Shoes must be worn at all times, except when sleeping or going to or from the shower. Shower flip-flops are encouraged.
A good rule of thumb in choosing clothing for any LVW activity is this: If you have to ask, don’t wear it!

Emergency phone numbers for camp:
FVL - 920-739-4441
Mr. Neujahr cell phone - 920-740-3924
Mr. Kramer cell phone - 920-242-9835

Help needed with uniforms during camp – ESPECIALLY TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY!:
Kathy Krahn is looking for several parents to help with uniform tasks during the week of camp. No real skill is necessary for fitting uniforms – only a willingness to help LVW members look their best! Call Kathy at 920-858-4760 (anytime) or email at kathykrahn6@gmail.com if you are able to help during camp, for a day or for a few hours!

Hello LVW Parents,

Here are the links for the housing and hosting forms for this June.  Please note that there are two forms - one for non-FVL families who are staying at a host home, and one form for FVL families who will be hosting students.

If you are a non-FVL family but WILL be hosting students, please use the LVW 2013 Hosting form for FVL students.

Please submit the form by Monday, May 20.  Parents and students should work together to fill out the form, because there is information that both will need to fill out such as medical information, emergency contact information, and listing students who are planning to stay with each other or hosting specific students.

LVW students will be staying in host homes on the following nights: June 4, 5, 6; June 12, 13; June 19; June 26.

Link to the "LVW 2013 Housing Form - Non FVL Students"

Link to the "LVW 2013 Hosting form for FVL Students"

Next week you will also find information on the website for the upcoming band camp, to be held at FVL beginning on June 4.  You can always find information on the "Current Season" tab.

I have also posted the schedule for our Home Show on June 22 on the "Home Show" tab on our website.  More information will be added to that page as well, such as ticket information, concessions, and so on.

May 12 Rehearsal Information

5/7/2013

The following information was sent as an email to all LVW parents this morning. If you did not receive the message, please email James Neujahr at jneujahr@fvlhs.org so I can update your email address.

We have come to that time of the year, and it is hard to believe that LVW has just one more rehearsal before the beginning of band camp. As far as the calendar goes, one month from TODAY is our first performance of the 2013 season, as we will be marching in the Brillion Electric Parade on Friday, June 7!

Our next rehearsal is this coming Sunday, May 12, from 1 - 5 PM at FVL. For this rehearsal, we may do some visual rehearsal outside, so the members should bring clothes to suit the climate for the day. As always, proper clothing is needed for visual rehearsals (comfortable tennis shoes, sweats, shorts, etc. Please - no jeans for visual rehearsals).

BEFORE THIS WEEKEND - marching members should check to see if their marching shoes can make it through another season!  We will be fitting for marching shoes on Sunday for those that need to order shoes.  Cost is approximately $38 per pair.  Members should also check to see if they still have the necessary 2 black under shirts for the uniform.  These are ordered through LVW, as they need to be the same style.  These shirts will be worn with the uniform, and in very hot weather actually become the uniform top.  In past years, we have made these available at $15 for two shirts.  Again, we will be checking this weekend who needs these shirts so an order can be made and the shirts are here for band camp.

Information for truck drivers, equipment and support personnel, chaperons, and the like will be available very soon.  Please keep an eye out for that information.

We will be taking additional photos for photo-buttons and magnets this coming Sunday. A form is available on the home page under the link, or in the post from March 28, or you can click HERE. Please, if you would like to purchase these popular items, bring the money or check to the rehearsal. Items are $3 each. Checks should be made out to “ Button Creations LLC“. If you had pictures taken at the April camp, those buttons will be available for pickup this Sunday. If you have not paid for them yet, please remember your money for these items.

Keep an eye on the LVW website for updates and other information as we near the summer season.
