Schedule and Info for July 3 - 8: Milwaukee area and Traverse City

6/30/2017

Here is information for the LVW members and support staff as you prepare for the upcoming rehearsal and performance week.  It will be another "BIG WEEK" with six parades!  The first parade of this next week will take place on Monday night, July 3, in Menomonee Falls.  We will also be participating in three parades on our nation's birthday, July 4, in Wauwatosa, New Berlin, and Hales Corners, WI.  Following a day of rehearsal in Milwaukee, the band heads to our "home away from home" at the National Cherry Festival in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan.  The band will participate in parades on Thursday, July 6 and Saturday, July 8.

The members and staff have been working VERY HARD over the past three weeks to put our show "Tetelestai" on the field!  Many thanks for their willingness to put in long rehearsal and performance days.  The marching arts activity is not an easy task for anyone involved.  We grow and mature musically, physically, mentally, and spiritually every single time we gather for rehearsals, travel, devotions, and down time.  That hard work has definitely paid off as is evident in how far our show has come since our first exhibition at Manitowoc Lutheran HS just a few short weeks ago.

Many thanks also to our crew of volunteers!  Our kitchen coordinators and workers put in more time than anyone can imagine to keep our band fed and well nourished!  The uniform staff has done well to keep us looking and smelling awesome!  Again, their work behind the scenes and on off days is much appreciated.  We have had several moms and dads driving trucks as well, including some new drivers.  Your time behind the wheel is so vitally important to the success of LVW.  A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS!

The first four weeks of our season have been spent primarily in rehearsal.  The kids and staff have pushed to make our parade and field performances as good as they can possibly be.  Their efforts will finally be rewarded with some much needed Free Time and Fun Time for socializing!

1.  Tuesday, July 4 - Following a long day of three parades, the band will be attending the Wauwatosa Fireworks at Hart Park. There will be entertainment, food vendors, and other activities at the park until 9:00 PM, followed by Fireworks at 9:15 PM.  LVW members can bring SPENDING MONEY for this evening.

2.  Friday, July 7 - After a morning rehearsal, the band will be taking the rest of the day off for free time at the National Cherry Festival!  We are making a return to the Sleeping Bear Dunes near Traverse City.  It has been a few years since we visited this National Lakeshore.  Then LVW will have several hours at the National Cherry Festival grounds as well as Downtown Traverse City. In all of our years traveling with the band - Traverse City seems to be our favorite destination!  LVW members will need SPENDING MONEY for their SUPPER on this day, as they will be "on their own" at the festival and downtown.

We will be staying at Wisconsin Lutheran HS on Monday through Thursday when we depart for Traverse City, so all staff and LVW members are to pack accordingly.  Remember, you should pack for SIX days, but again try to utilize small suitcases and duffel bags. We are traveling with school buses for Monday through Wednesday so space will be very limited.  We will be traveling on luxurious Nationwide Motorcoaches for the trip to Traverse City!

Here is a summary of our rehearsals and performances this coming week.  The links will take you directly to information provided by each parade committee or organization.  You will see routes, times, and maps.

Monday, July 3 - Independence Day Parade in Menomonee Falls (7:00 PM)
Tuesday, July 4 – Wauwatosa Parade, 9:00 AM; New Berlin Parade, 1:00 PM; Hales Corners Parade, 4:00 PM

Milwaukee, WI 53213

Trinity Lutheran Church and School
1003 South Maple
Traverse City, MI 49684
Trinity Lutheran Church and School: 231-946-2720

Emergency contact information:
Joel Ungemach Mobile Phone - 920-973-3240

Since this is a rehearsal, performance, and travel week, LVW members should remember to pack the following:

Sleeping bag and pillow
Air mattress (optional)
ONE suitcase and ONE SMALL Carry on bag (for motorcoach travel)
All personal items as needed (towel, soap and shampoo, change of clothes, DEODERANT, etc.)
BLACK SHOES AND SOCKS, BLACK A-4 T-SHIRTS, BLACK GLOVES, GUARD APPAREL, ETC. (Note we have SIX performances this trip!)
Instruments, music, etc.
Water jugs, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, comfortable marching shoes, hats, etc.
EXTRA INFO - students may want to bring swim suits and towels, as there is a very nice beach area near the Cherry Festival grounds.  Some students also walk the approximately 2 miles from the Dunes to the Lake Michigan shoreline.  Swimming is optional for all LVW students.

Here are some items to consider having on the Nationwide Motorcoaches for our trip to Traverse City:

Bring on the coach bus in your small carry on
1. Charging cord for devices.(there's an outlet in the back of every seat)
2. Headphones
3. A blanket (air conditioning is quite chilly)
4. A DVD movie (one to watch on the bus monitors, PG-13 PG or G.)
5. Comfy clothes and sweatshirt for bus ride
6. A few snacks for bus ride, but not many and nothing messy.

And, regarding spending money...
7. Set aside $15 for the Traverse City marching band t-shirt. These are preordered, and you don't want to run out of money, or not have enough for a shirt.
8. Set aside $10 for your supper at the Cherry Festival Fairgrounds/TC downtown for the evening of Friday, July 7.  There are MANY choices of great places to eat, from nicer restaurants and bistros downtown to vendor tents in the Festival Grounds and the Carnival.  Obviously, some places are more expensive than others.

Information for June 14 - 18 and Chilton Parade

I want to first congratulate everyone for a job well done during this first week of camp!  Thanks to Shari Graham and Tammy Fick and our army of volunteer support staff for making sure the kids were fed, to Clay and Johanna Funk and our uniform crew for helping them look awesome, to those with the band on the parade routes, and to our equipment crew who prepared the truck, and made sure that we have everything in place for our first two performances. Also thanks to Joel Ungemach for his work with the volunteers and preparing bins and supplies for the beginning of our season!  Without our support staff, our members would not be able to accomplish the things they do.

Thanks also to our director staff for their attention to detail and providing our kids with excellent instruction!  In just a few short days, they steadily brought the band from a collection of inexperienced students from many schools to the entertaining group we know as Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin!  The transformation is truly remarkable, and will continue throughout the season in a forward direction.

Last, but certainly not least, thanks go to the members of LVW!  Their focus and energy to learn was outstanding.  It really is amazing to see how quickly they can improve!  Our first two parades were the best "first parades" in recent memory!  In fact, the members were confident enough with their parade music and routine that LVW spent a good portion of the first camp working on our show music.  That doesn't happen every year!  It was a great start to what is shaping up to be another excellent year!

This next week will be a rehearsal week as we begin to focus more on the field show.  So this week is vitally important to the rest of the summer, as this will be the first dedicated rehearsal week with several days in a row to learn and improve the show.

Rehearsal will begin on Wednesday at 10:00 AM, and will take place at Manitowoc Lutheran HS.  Times for this week are basically the same as they were last week for the first week of camp.  The week will conclude following the Chilton Father's Day Parade on Sunday afternoon.

TRANSPORTATION TO MLHS ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14
Students from KML, LPS, SLHS and WLHS will be riding on the Shoreland bus.  Again, this will be similar to what we did at the beginning of this first camp.  The travel times and pick up points are different from last week.  Check the Director's Update from June 1st for those times and pick ups.

FVL students should arrive at FVL at 8:00 AM on Wednesday!  We will be using a Lamers bus to transport FVL students.  The bus will load at 8:15 AM, and will depart at 8:30 AM.

All students should bring a BAG LUNCH for Wednesday lunch.  All other meals will be provided by LVW.  We will be staying at MLHS each night.  Students should remember to pack everything needed for five days of camp.  The packing list for this past week will be a good reference for this week as well, with the main difference being we have one parade instead of two.

Additional items to pack for Camp #2 - LVW will be attending church services at First German in Manitowoc on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM.  Students should bring "Nice Casual Clothing" for this service.  Shorts are OK, as long as the clothing is clean and proper for a worship service.  Following church we will go to Cedar Crest for some ice cream!  LVW will cover the cost of the ice cream.

The students are also to have a "Field Bag" with them for the rest of the summer.  Now that we are going to be spending a considerable amount of time on a football field, the Field Bag is a small backpack or drawstring bag with the following items:
  • Drill/Music Folder
  • Dot Book
  • Pens and Pencils
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat and Sunglasses
All of these items are REQUIRED of all members.  The "dot book" should be a spiral bound 3x5 or 4x6 index card book with at least 50 pages in it.  These can be purchased at Shopko/Wal Mart/Target/etc.  Make sure these items are packed and ready to go!

SPECIAL ACTIVITY INFO
Mr. Ungemach has arranged for an activity on Friday, June 16  We will be going to Citizen's Park in Manitowoc.  They have a swimming park with water slides!  LVW will pick up the cost for the students, but students may bring their own money for concessions.  Obviously students should pack a swimming suit.

As we did last year, we will be lighting fire pits and having S'mores following the exhibition show on Saturday night.  Students may want to bring some jeans or light jackets if the weather is a bit cooler or if there are mosquitoes looking to eat as well.

Students should also make sure to take care of themselves before returning to camp.  They were instructed to drink plenty of water so they can be fully hydrated.  We saw some very hot and humid weather this first week, and next week could bring more of the same.  Students should also remember especially to bring sunscreen (at least SPF 30), sunglasses, and hats as we will be spending the majority of our time outside on the MLHS football field.

LVW EXHIBITION PERFORMANCE SATURDAY, JUNE 17
In order to help us prepare for our first shows of the year, LVW will be doing a full dress rehearsal on Saturday, June 17.  This performance will be held on the MLHS Football Field.  The Exhibition Show will begin at approximately 7:00, but LVW will be doing show warm ups and other preparations already at 6:00 PM.  ALL ARE WELCOME to attend!  MLHS is doing lots of advertising for this performance in their churches and among the MLHS families.  This will likely not be our full show, but will definitely give us an opportunity to perform what we have learned up to that point, and will give our fans a chance to get a bit of a preview to what is in store for the rest of the season.  Here is the event on FACEBOOK.

The Chilton Father's Day Parade is Sunday!  Parade start time is 11:00 AM, and will begin near the county fairgrounds at the corner of Madison Street (Hwy 57) and Chestnut Street.  It will proceed north on Madison, west on Main, north on State, east on School, south on Madison, and east on Main where it will end near Adams Street.  There are a lot of corners in the middle of the parade, since it goes around a block in the downtown area.  This has been a great parade for us in the past. Lots of parents, groupies, and family members are on hand to cheer us on! In addition, it gained a reputation as a “CANDY” parade, so if you have little ones going along (or big “Kids” at heart), bring along bags and buckets! There is no reviewing stand in this parade, and no judging, so if you want to gather with other LVW family, I would suggest somewhere along the beginning of the route on Madison Street, since it is nice and wide, and very straight. Once there, find the groupies!  Here is a map of the Chilton Parade Route (This is from previous years - sorry for the "low tech" look to the scanned map - it is still the same route!)

TRANSPORTATION HOME FOLLOWING THE CHILTON PARADE
LVW will be busing the band to Chilton on Sunday for the parade.  The buses will be returning to FVL (Lamers) and MLHS (Brandt) following the parade by approximately 2:00 - 2:15.  For all other schools, check with your transportation coordinator for arrival times following the parade. All of our non-FVL and MLHS students are either riding with parents or will ride home with others from their area.  There is NO SHORELAND BUS following the Chilton parade.  If you will be picking up your LVW member following the Chilton parade, the pick up point will be St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, 717 Memorial Drive, Chilton, WI 53014.

Checkout Procedures
If you are going to be picked up following the parade, and are not returning on the bus or with your school’s transportation, the following procedures MUST be followed:
1.  Your parents must pick you up where we are changing out of uniform. For this weekend, that will be on Sunday, at St. Martin Lutheran Church, Chilton. If you are picking up your child at St. Martin, you must be there when the band is ready to leave. If you are not there when the band is ready to leave, your child will come with the band.
2.   Your parents must check you out with the attendance chaperone from your bus. This must be done with you and your parent present.
3.  If your parents are not there when the band is ready to leave, you will come with us. We leave no one behind – EVER!
4.  You may not ride home with anyone else other than your parents UNLESS you have a written permission signed by your parents, and UNLESS that written permission is put into our hands. DON’T FORGET THE NOTE AT HOME, because there are NO EXCEPTIONS!
