2016 Tour Packing List

6/27/2016

When packing for the upcoming tour, use this list to assist in what you bring:

Everyone should bring a BAG LUNCH for Wednesday, June 29.
  • Sleeping bag and pillow.  A blanket or pillow for inside the bus is recommended, or a sweatshirt of some kind.  It can be chilly on the bus for those long rides.
  • Air mattress (optional)
  • ONE suitcase and ONE small carry-on bag for inside the bus – LABELED WITH NAME, ADDRESS, AND NAME OF SCHOOL
  • "BUS FOOD" - do not go overboard on this!  LVW students are fed VERY WELL while on tour!
  • A small draw-string bag or backpack will be very useful for days when we are sightseeing for storing cash, hats, phones, etc.
  • Movies (DVD) for on the bus – Disney movies, Zorro, The Princess Bride, the usual! R-rated movies are NOT acceptable.
  • All personal items as needed (towel, soap and shampoo, several changes of clothes, DEODERANT, etc.)
  • BLACK SHOES AND SOCKS (several pairs), Black A4 T-SHIRTS (two to several), CLEAN BLACK GLOVES, BLACK SHORTS FOR UNDER THE UNIFORM, GUARD APPAREL, ETC. (Note we have FOUR parades and TWO field shows this trip!)
  • Instruments, field bag, dot books, music binder, reeds, oils, etc. – CASES MUST BE LABELED AS INDICATED ABOVE
  • Water jugs, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable marching shoes, hats, etc.
  • Spending money for souvenirs – We will be attending a DCI show while in Massachusetts; a community July 4th celebration (with food vendors) in Wakefield; the Freedom Trail in Boston; and the Cherry Festival grounds in Traverse City. In addition, the band members will need to provide for themselves a few meals (see complete Tour Itinerary in a separate post) while on the trip. They will also want some spending money for other small items when we stop at rest areas, such as soda, chips, trinkets, and the like. We will also be selling juices, water, and Gatorade on the bus for either $.50 or $1 or so. It is hard to tell you how much money to bring, but figure souvenir t-shirts or sweatshirts are between $10 and $40, and the meals could average $10 - $15 each. It is up to you how much to bring.
  • The students, staff, and volunteers will also need to bring $25 for the ticket to the DCI show.  Cash is OK, and if bringing a check it can be made out to "Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin" with "DCI Tickets" on the memo line.

We will also plan on stopping at a laundromat at some point in the tour, possibly after the Freedom Trail, so it isn't necessary to pack clothes for all 11 days!  Plan on packing for about 7 or 8 days instead.  LVW will cover the cost of the washing machines and dryers, and also supply the detergent.

2016 Tour Highlights

6/26/2016

Here is a day-to-day outline for the upcoming trip to Massachusetts and Michigan.  A more detailed itinerary will be posted soon with daily schedules, packing information, spending money needs, and so on.

Follow this link for a printable PDF of the 2016 Tour Outline.

June 29                   Today is a rehearsal day at FVL.  Rehearsal will begin at 10:00 AM.  Overnight at FVL

June 30                   2016 VANGUARD CLASSIC SHOW DAY!  LVW will present its biggest and best show to date with 8 performing bands.  We will rehearse at FVL.  Show time is 7:00 PM.  Overnight at FVL.

July 1                      The tour begins in Appleton where we load the FVL students, and head to Youngstown, Ohio for overnight.  Our housing will be Valley Christian Schools Main Campus (603 miles)

July 2                      After a quick but very hospitable stay at Valley Christian, we head to Massachusetts.  We have another long travel day to get to our destination near Boston.  We will be staying the next two nights at Chelmsford, MA High School (603 Miles – I know, what a coincidence!)

July 3                      After breakfast, LVW has a much needed rehearsal day.  If that wasn’t awesome enough, LVW will be attending the “Beanpot Invitational” DCI show this evening!  Tickets for the LVW members, staff, and volunteers have already been purchased, and as this is not a budgeted item, we are asking everyone to pay $25 for their ticket.  Because we have such a large group order, we are receiving $5 off the ticket price! (70 Miles)

July 4                      Happy Birthday America!  We will participate in some very special performances today.  At 10:00 AM, LVW will march in Chelmsford, MA for their July 4th Parade.  LVW has a break before we march that evening in the  Wakefield, MA July 4th Parade, which steps off at 5:00 PM.  After the parade, we will celebrate our nation’s birthday by watching some fireworks.  Our housing for tonight at tomorrow is at Wakefield High School.  (50 Miles)

July 5                      Today we have many things planned!  Our schedule will depend on the day’s schedule for the Bluecoats (TBD).  We begin the morning with a short and very focused rehearsal.  Then we head to Boston and have several hours to tour the Freedom Trail.  The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads you to 16 nationally significant historic sites, every one an authentic American treasure. Preserved and dedicated by the citizens of Boston in 1958, when the wrecking ball threatened, the Freedom Trail today is a unique collection of museums, churches, meeting houses, burying grounds, parks, a ship, and historic markers that tell the story of the American Revolution and beyond. We have a special treat in store for tonight – LVW will observe the evening rehearsal of DCI champion contender Bluecoats, who just happen to be staying at the same school as LVW!  (30 Miles)

July 6                      We say farewell to the Boston area and head back to the Midwest.  We will again spend the night at Valley Christan School in Youngstown, OH. (612 Miles)

July 7                      Today is a travel and parade day.  We leave Ohio and head to Traverse City, Michigan for the next three days!  After a VERY QUICK unpack and move in, we march in the Touchstone Energy Junior Royale Parade at 6:15 PM.  You will be amazed at the beautiful floats and the number of bands that participate in the two parades in Traverse City.  (www.cherryfestival.org)  After the parade tonight LVW will take in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the world famous “Cherry Festival” grounds.  Our housing through Saturday is Trinity Lutheran Church and School, LVW’s “Home away from Home” for the past twenty-plus years.(464 Miles)

July 8                      Rehearsal and Show Day!  After a few hours of rehearsal in the morning and afternoon, we appear in the Cherryland Band Classic Field Competition.  You won’t want to miss this show, which will be held at beautiful Thirlby Field, just a block from our housing.

July 9                      LVW marches in the DTE Energy Cherry Royale Parade at 11:15 AM.  Lots of bands, floats, and cheering spectators make this one of the greatest parades you will ever march in!  After a light lunch we head back home for some well-deserved days off before we conclude our season the next week.  From Traverse City to Appleton is 530 miles.  That gives us a grand total of just under 3000 miles covered over the past week and a half.  We give praise to our Heavenly Father for his sustaining love and grace on our Eastern Tour!

General Info for Week #3: KML, Mukwonago, New Berlin, Greendale, Oregon

6/18/2016

The past few days of rehearsals at Manitowoc Lutheran HS have been very productive, with absolutely gorgeous weather and focused band members!  Part One, with drill and music - was performed on the field on Friday evening.   Today the band is learning Part Two, in preparation for our exhibition show this evening at MLHS.  The band will begin their pre-show warm ups at about 6:30, with the Show time at about 7:00 PM, in full uniform!   We will be performing our show as learned so far - still a work in progress, but we are VERY excited about the progress and possibilities for our show this year.  As you know, we have the best kids in the world!

Here is information for the LVW members and support staff as you prepare for the upcoming rehearsal and performance week.

PACK A BAG LUNCH for Wednesday, June 22.  All other meals will be provided by LVW.

Rehearsal begins at 10:00 AM at KML.

We will be staying at KML on Wednesday through Friday night.  After the Greendale show on Saturday, the band will be staying at Lakeside Lutheran HS, and then finishing the week with the parade and show at Oregon.

Remember, you should pack for FIVE days, but try to utilize small suitcases and duffel bags. We are traveling with school buses for this week, so space will be very limited.

This is a HUGE week for LVW!  We will be entering our first weekend of competitive performances of the 2016 season. Rehearsals and Performances this weekend include the following:

Wednesday, June 22 - Rehearsal at KML
Thursday, June 23 – Rehearsal at KML and evening Field Show at Mukwonago HS, 7:30 PM
Friday, June 24 – Rehearsal at KML and evening Field Show at New Berlin West, 7:30 PM
Saturday, June 25 – Rehearsal at KML and evening Field Show at Greendale HS, 7:30 PM.
Sunday, June 26 – Oregon Summerfest Parade, 12:30 PM; Oregon Field Show, 7:00 PM

LVW will be housed in the following locations this weekend:
Wednesday through Saturday – KML
Saturday night – Lakeside LHS

Emergency contact information:
James Neujahr Mobile Phone - 920-740-3924 - Wednesday through Friday night
Ben Jeske Mobile Phone - 262-501-5238 - Saturday and Sunday

Since this is a rehearsal, performance, and travel week, LVW members should remember to pack the following:

Sleeping bag and pillow
Air mattress (optional)
ONE small suitcase (Remember, we are on School Buses this weekend)
All personal items as needed (towel, soap and shampoo, change of clothes, DEODORANT, etc.)
BLACK SHOES AND SOCKS, BLACK A-4 T-SHIRTS, BLACK GLOVES, GUARD APPAREL, ETC. (Note we have FIVE performances this trip!)
Instruments, music, etc.
Music and Show Binder, Dot Books, Field Bag
Water jugs, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable marching shoes, hats, etc.

Because of show and travel times, LVW will be holding a church service at Lakeside Lutheran HS on Sunday morning.

Checkout Procedures for Sunday, June 26:
If you are going to be picked up following the Oregon Field Show, and are not returning on the bus or with your school’s designated transportation, the following procedures MUST be followed:

1.  Your parents must pick you up where we are changing out of uniform. For this weekend, that will be on Sunday, at Oregon HS (456 N. Perry Pkwy, Oregon, WI 53575). Please be aware, if you are picking up your child, you must be there before the band is ready to leave. If you are not there when the band is ready to leave, your child will come with the band.

Information and Itinerary for June 15 - 19

I want to first congratulate everyone for a job well done during this first week of camp!  Thanks to Janet Behm and our army of volunteer support staff for making sure the kids were fed, to Clay and Johanna Funk and Kirsten and Ben Rusch and our uniform crew for helping them look awesome, to those who will be with the band on the parade routes, and to our equipment crew who prepared the truck, and will make sure that we have everything in place for our first two performances. Also thanks to Joel Ungemach for his work with the volunteers and preparing bins and supplies for the beginning of our season!  Without our support staff, our members would not be able to accomplish the things they do.

Thanks also to our director staff for their attention to detail and providing our kids with excellent instruction!  In just a few short days, they steadily brought the band from a collection of inexperienced students from many schools to the entertaining group we know as Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin!  The transformation is truly remarkable, and will continue throughout the season in a forward direction.

Last, but certainly not least, thanks go to the members of LVW!  Their focus and energy to learn was outstanding.  It really is amazing to see how quickly they can improve!  Our first two parades may be a bit rocky, but never the less It will be a great summer, and the improvement from now until July 16 will be extraordinary!

This next week will be a rehearsal week as we begin to focus more on the field show.  So this week is vitally important to the rest of the summer, as this will be the last dedicated rehearsal week with several days in a row to learn and improve the show.

Rehearsal will begin on Wednesday at 10:00 AM, and will take place at Manitowoc Lutheran HS.  Times for this week are basically the same as they were last week for the first week of camp.  The week will conclude following the Chilton Father's Day Parade on Sunday afternoon.

TRANSPORTATION TO MLHS ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15
Students from KML, LPS, and WLHS will be arranging for their transportation.  Again, this will be similar to what we did at the beginning of this first camp.  Check with your directors and parents for travel times and pick up points.

FVL students should arrive at FVL at 8:00 AM on Wednesday!  We will be using a Lamers bus to transport FVL students.  The bus will load at 8:15 AM, and will depart at 8:30 AM.

All students should bring a BAG LUNCH for Wednesday lunch.  All other meals will be provided by LVW.  We will be staying at MLHS each night.  Students should remember to pack everything needed for five days of camp.  The packing list for this past week will be a good reference for this week as well, with the main difference being we have one parade instead of two.

Additional items to pack for Camp #2 - LVW will be attending church services at First German in Manitowoc on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM.  Students should bring "Nice Casual Clothing" for this service.  Shorts are OK, as long as the clothing is clean and proper for a worship service.

The students are also to have a "Field Bag" with them for the rest of the summer.  Now that we are going to be spending a considerable amount of time on a football field, the Field Bag is a small backpack or drawstring bag with the following items:
  • Drill/Music Folder
  • Dot Book
  • Pens and Pencils
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat and Sunglasses
All of these items are REQUIRED of all members.  They were all issued a dot book and drill/music folder this week, as well as the first several pages of the drill.  Make sure these items are packed and ready to go!

SPECIAL ACTIVITY INFO FOR FRIDAY, JUNE 17
Mr. Ungemach has arranged for an activity on Friday, June 17.  We will be going to Citizen's Park in Manitowoc.  They have a swimming park with water slides!  They also have an 18 Hole Miniature Golf Course!  LVW will pick up the cost for the students, but students will have to decide if they want to go swimming or golfing.  Obviously students should pack a swimming suit if they will be using the water park.  The reason we have to make a choice is that there is a fee for each activity, and the fees are different for each activity.

Students should also make sure to take care of themselves before returning to camp.  They were instructed to drink plenty of water so they can be fully hydrated.  We saw some very hot and humid weather this first week, and next week could bring more of the same.  Students should also remember especially to bring sunscreen (at least SPF 30), sunglasses, and hats as we will be spending the majority of our time outside on the MLHS football field.

LVW EXHIBITION PERFORMANCE SATURDAY, JUNE 18
In order to help us prepare for our first shows of the year, LVW will be doing a full dress rehearsal on Saturday, June 18.  This performance will be held on the MLHS Football Field.  The Exhibition Show will begin at approximately 7:00, but LVW will be doing show warm ups and other preparations already at 6:00 PM.  ALL ARE WELCOME to attend!  MLHS is doing lots of advertising for this performance in their churches and among the MLHS families.  This will likely not be our full show, but will definitely give us an opportunity to perform what we have learned up to that point, and will give our fans a chance to get a bit of a preview to what is in store for the rest of the season.

The Chilton Father's Day Parade is Sunday!  Parade start time is 11:00 AM, and will begin near the county fairgrounds at the corner of Madison Street (Hwy 57) and Chestnut Street.  It will proceed north on Madison, west on Main, north on State, east on School, south on Madison, and east on Main where it will end near Adams Street.  There are a lot of corners in the middle of the parade, since it goes around a block in the downtown area.  This has been a great parade for us in the past. Lots of parents, groupies, and family members are on hand to cheer us on! In addition, it gained a reputation as a “CANDY” parade, so if you have little ones going along (or big “Kids” at heart), bring along bags and buckets! There is no reviewing stand in this parade, and no judging, so if you want to gather with other LVW family, I would suggest somewhere along the beginning of the route on Madison Street, since it is nice and wide, and very straight. Once there, find the groupies!  Here is a map of the Chilton Parade Route (This is from previous years - sorry for the "low tech" look to the scanned map - it is still the same route!)

TRANSPORTATION HOME FOLLOWING THE CHILTON PARADE
LVW will be busing the band to Chilton on Sunday for the parade.  The buses will be returning to FVL following the parade by approximately 2:00 - 2:15.  For all other schools, check with your transportation coordinator for arrival times following the parade. All of our non-FVL students are either riding with parents or will ride home with others from their area.  If you will be picking up your LVW member following the Chilton parade, the pick up point will be St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, 717 Memorial Drive, Chilton, WI 53014.

Checkout Procedures
If you are going to be picked up following the parade, and are not returning on the bus or with your school’s transportation, the following procedures MUST be followed:
1.  Your parents must pick you up where we are changing out of uniform. For this weekend, that will be on Sunday, at St. Martin Lutheran Church, Chilton. If you are picking up your child at St. Martin, you must be there when the band is ready to leave. If you are not there when the band is ready to leave, your child will come with the band.
2.   Your parents must check you out with the attendance chaperone from your bus. This must be done with you and your parent present.
3.  If your parents are not there when the band is ready to leave, you will come with us. We leave no one behind – EVER!
4.  You may not ride home with anyone else other than your parents UNLESS you have a written permission signed by your parents, and UNLESS that written permission is put into our hands. DON’T FORGET THE NOTE AT HOME, because there are NO EXCEPTIONS!
