LVW 2022 - Follow Up Food and Volunteers

6/1/2022

LVW veterans - welcome back!
LVW first timers - welcome to the family we are so glad you are here!

My name is Holly Kubek and this will be my 6th year heading up the kitchen crew!  My first son started LVW in Summer of 2009 and Kurt will be our last season in 2022.
LVW is on the grow and I have no doubt will continue on after our family "ages out" this summer.  It has been pure joy (and some hard work) to be involved with the band all these years.  Think about your kids' future with the band and how you can get involved this year and in the future.  My husband Tony Kubek has been the head chaperone for many of those years and he too will be "aged out" after this season.

Next summer LVW will need new moms and dads to head up the kitchen and be the head chaperone/volunteer coordinator - if anyone wants to be a little deeper involved this year to "learn the ropes" let us know and we can bring you along behind the scenes a bit.

A few notes about the meals, we do our best to accommodate a large group of students and adults. We are all just moms and dads who are cooking for the band. We are not formally trained in food service.  But we'll do our best to safely prepare & serve good food, balanced nutrition, and have a little fun too.  We cannot do this without broad participation at both school locations - FVL and Kettle.  Thanks to all those who have signed up to help in the kitchen thus far! We are off to a great start at filling those slots! No experience is necessary - we'll teach you as we go - we encourage you to raise your hand and come along!

Here is the link:SIGN UP HERE

We'll be planning for about 100-125 servings when considering band members, staff and volunteers! That's alot of hungry mouths to feed - so we did increase the number of slots per meal and the length of the shifts.  When you volunteer in the kitchen, your shift will be done in time to ensure you can participate/view the parades - we won't leave anyone behind.

A few NEW things this year with the kitchen/food:

1. Designated dishwasher spot - this shift starts a little later than the meal prep slots, we'll train how to use the commercial dishwasher and wash sinks, you would help guide the student helpers on "kitchen clean up duty".  With the larger group we'll need a little more focus in this area to keep up with the timely cleaning and ending of each meal shift.

2. Breakfast/Chaperone extended time - the chaperones who stay overnight are responsible for breakfast in the AM, with the size of the band we know the clean up will take a bit longer than last year, so we extended the time to ensure that clean up of breakfast takes place before the lunch crew arrives.
3. Donations - we know not everyone will be able to volunteer a shift in the kitchen and not everyone will be able to donate, but we ask those who can and are able to make a food donation - please bring to the first day of camp at FVL on 6/7.

Please consider any off the list below:
  • watermelons - we go through many many watermelons; we always need more watermelon, the kids love watermelon, did I mention watermelons?
  • powdered lemonade mix - regular and pink lemonade
  • desserts - the kids always LOVE a dessert at lunch & dinner, these can be homemade or store bought
    • NO nuts or peanut butter ingredients of any kind please (we have multiple members with nut/peanut allergies)
  • boxes of jello - any flavors/colors
  • frozen treats of any kind - popsicles, freezy pops,  ice cream, sherbert, sorbet, diary and non dairy options appreciated
  • sundae toppings - fudge, sprinkles, whipped cream, cherries, chocolate chips, etc (no nuts or peanut butter ingredients of any kind please)

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to us and we are happy to help!
Looking forward to the season kicking off in just a week!

LVW Summer Camp and First Parades Information

5/17/2022

The LVW 2022 summer season gets underway in a just a few weeks!  We are extremely excited about the beginning of the first summer Camp and all that it brings - complete staff and membership together for the first time, lots of great focused rehearsal time, marked improvement every day, lasting friendships beginning to form, and the bonding of the LVW family into a Christian family that is so much larger than a marching band!  LVW will once again be marching in parades with the Cross of Christ foremost on our minds and firmly fixed to our uniforms, as we strive to do all things to His glory!

First - a word about our uniforms.  As you know, LVW wore our brand new uniforms last summer.  They are shared with Manitowoc Lutheran High School.  When they were purchased, 65 uniforms was plenty to outfit both LVW and MLHS.  Last summer, LVW had 49 members, and the uniforms fit us with few to none to spare in the common sizes.  With our efforts to purchase more uniforms (mattress sale, etc.) we wanted to ensure that we would have enough to last into the near future.  However, the band grew much larger than we anticipated in just one year!  That is a good problem!  So even with additional uniforms - we do not have enough to outfit the band.  So for one more year, we will be wearing the LVW uniform from 2007 - 2018.  Then, over the course of the next year, we will purchase enough uniforms for this much larger Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin.

This post contains LOTS of information!  Please take the time to read through EVERYTHING, as there are important details for both MEMBERS and PARENTS - so make sure members and parents read through this.  It would be a great idea to sit down and do this together, so that nothing is left to chance or missed.

Check Back to this Site OFTEN!
This website is the main method of communication for LVW.  Important updates, such as weekly itineraries, travel information, and weekend-specific information will always be posted on the "Director's Updates" page.  We will also send periodic notifications via email and Facebook (this is LVW's general Facebook page), but those messages will almost always direct you to this page. Important links will also be posted to the LVW Homepage, but again, those links will usually direct you here.

Volunteering for LVW - A Great Opportunity to Let Your Light Shine!
We are again be using "SignUp.com" to indicate when, where, and how you would like to assist.  For more information about Volunteering, go to our VOLUNTEER INFO.  MANY spots are still open!  We are especially in need of helpers for the kitchen during Camp #1 week, and lots of other tasks throughout the summer.

Appleton Flag Day Parade 2:00 PM - LVW's spot in the parade is still TBD out of 105 units in the parade.

LVW members will be dismissed from FVL following the parade.  We will be changing out of uniform and making sure the school is clean and in order before departure.  The expected time of departure will be approximately 5:00 - 5:30 PM on Saturday, June 11.

PLEASE NOTE - since almost all of the LVW parents attend the Appleton Flag Day Parade, we are not planning on a return bus that day.  Your school director can help to arrange for rides home for students whose parents are not able to pick them up at FVL following the parade.  Please plan accordingly.

First Performances of the Year:
Our first performance of the 2022 season is Friday, June 10.  We will be marching in the Brillion Electric Parade. The parade will begin at 9:00 PM. A few words of caution for this parade: bring mosquito repellent, rain slickers and umbrellas (if past years are any indication of what we can expect)! The parade travels right down the middle of town on Main Street (South end and travels North) through the business district. As of this writing, LVW’s position in the parade is not known.

Then on Saturday, June11, LVW will appear in the 71st Annual Appleton Flag Day Parade, the “largest and oldest Flag Day Parade in the United States.” This parade begins at 2:00 PM. The route begins at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Oneida Street, travels west on Wisconsin to State Street where it turns south. It continues on State Street to College Avenue, where it travels east to Drew Street where the parade ends. There will be a reviewing stand where many, MANY LVW parents and fans like to congregate. The stand is in the block just before the end of the parade at 321 E College Avenue. Much more information can be found at APPLETON FLAG DAY PARADE.  The website MAY be updated with a map of the parade route.  A complete Parade Line Up may also be available in the near future by clicking the link.

WFRV TV 5 will likely videotape the Parade for rebroadcast on WFRV TV 5.  At the time of this writing it has not been announced when the parade will be broadcast (live and/or tape-delay).

What to bring with you to band camp:
LVW members should pack clothing for five days of rehearsal and performance.  Please remember your personal uniform items, which include the black shoes/socks, gloves, and t-shirts.  PLEASE NOTE – gloves and the special Uniform Compression Shirt will be handed out at Camp. There is a more detailed packing list for band camp following so you can make sure you have all of the necessary items.

Shoes and Shirt sizes were recorded when you registered for LVW.  The shoes and shirts will be ready to hand out at camp.  Returning members - please don't forget your shoes if you did not order new ones!

If you have not yet purchased shoes, shirts, or the color guard personal items for 2022, please go to our JOIN page and click on LVW Store.  You can purchase the items there.  We will be ordering by the end of this week (May 20) so please do this ASAP!

We will be staying at FVL on Tuesday through Friday night.  All members should bring a sleeping bag/pillow/air mattress and personal items (deodorant/towel/soap/shampoo/etc).

Packing List
1. Instrument and/or other necessary equipment
2. All music and warm-ups—memorized as much as possible!
3. Enough comfortable clothing for five days of camp, especially comfortable shoes!! (Note that no sandals of any kind will be allowed for any marching or music rehearsals) Bring clothes for very warm or cool weather.
4. Sunscreen or sunblock (SPF 30 or higher) – and be sure to use it! A WIDE-BRIMMED hat/baseball cap is also a MUST. We will be outside for much of camp.
5. A one gallon (or other large size) water jug LABLED WITH YOUR NAME
6. Reeds, valve oil, slide grease, cork grease, etc.
7.  Sunglasses are a definite bonus!
8. Tennis shoes for use indoors—the shoes used outside may not be allowed on the gym floors if they are too dirty.
9. Frisbees, cards, cribbage boards, chess sets, etc. for any free time that you may have (NOTE: Frisbees and balls or any other throwing device will not be used at any time inside any building – this rule applies to the entire summer.)
10. Your black marching shoes (some members will be receiving these at Band Camp)
11. BLACK SOCKS for all members, including guard
12. Black Spandex or Bike shorts for under your uniform
14. Anything else that you will need for your marching instrument, equipment, uniform, and performance
15. LOTS OF ENTHUSIASM AND A STRONG DESIRE TO LEARN!!

Color guard members are to make sure that you have all of the needed uniform items, which include black socks, black spandex shorts and other parts of the uniform (which will be supplied to you before our first performances).  Guard instructor Angela Hohenstein may send an email to all guard members with more information.

Uniforms:
We will be wearing our former LVW uniforms for all performances this summer. These uniforms become the visual representation of who and what we are. Wear your uniform with pride and respect, and take care of it in the same way! Guidelines on how to take proper care of your new uniform will be given to you during band camp.

All wind and percussion players are to bring along black shoes, black socks, and black shorts as outlined above. Everyone will be given a pair of PERFORMANCE gloves, which will be worn with the uniform. The first pair will be free. For all extra gloves that you may need for the summer, the cost will be $3.00 per pair. Be sure to have your money with you. It is a good idea to purchase an extra pair, just in case. Also, for extended weekend trips with several performances, the second pair will come in very handy. If anyone loses their gloves, a new pair must be purchased. Take care of this very visible part of your uniform!

Special notes on your appearance for our performances:
1. No jewelry is to be worn during performances. This includes rings and watches. Ladies may wear earring posts only if they are covered by Band-Aid material. If your ears were not already pierced, it would be wise to wait until after our season is done!
2. Guys are allowed to wear earrings for rehearsals or other non-performance times while with the band. The following guidelines apply to guys – you are permitted to wear one post or stud earring per ear. You are not permitted to wear dangling or hoop earrings, or more than one earring per ear lobe.
3. Hair must be worn up in the hat. There are to be no bangs allowed to hang down in front, or curls down the side. If the hair reaches over the collar of the uniform, it must be worn under the hat, either pinned up or contained in a hair net. This includes gentlemen whose hair is long and/or unkempt.  Gentlemen, it is best if your hair is cut short for the summer.
4. Gentlemen must be clean-shaven for all performances.

Attire when with the band:
As we head into the summer season, we would like to remind you to use good taste and judgement in your choice of what to wear. Remember that we are all witnesses for our Savior, even in rehearsals! Please follow these guidelines:
1. Extremely short shorts, bare midriffs, nearly-bare midriffs (if your tummy shows when you stretch up), spaghetti-strap tank-tops, or the very loose-fitting sleeveless-style tops are not acceptable for any of our members, male or female, as these could detract from the image and purpose of our band, and could possibly prove to be a stumbling block for others.
2. Gentlemen must wear a shirt at all times, for the same reasons as in #1.
3. Shirts, caps, or other clothing with logos of rock groups, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, or objectionable slogans are not to be worn, as they detract from the image and purpose of our band.
4. Shoes must be worn at all times, except when sleeping. Shower flip-flops should be worn to and from the showers.
A good rule of thumb in choosing clothing for any LVW activity is this: If you have to ask, don’t wear it!

Emergency phone numbers for camp:
FVL - 920-739-4441
Mr. Neujahr mobile phone - 920-740-3924

Help needed with uniforms during camp – ESPECIALLY Tuesday!:
We are looking for a few parents to help with uniform tasks during the week of camp. No real skill is necessary for fitting uniforms – only a willingness to help LVW members look their best!  We will begin fitting members already on Tuesday, so any and all help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Hello Family and Friends of Lutheran Vanguard,

After an incredible comeback year last season, we have almost twice as many parades this year, almost twice as many kids, and definitely twice as much excitement for the 2022 Vanguard marching season...and we'd love for you to be a part of it!

Included in this post, as well as on Facebook, you'll find links to sign up to volunteer to help throughout the season. We simply couldn't conduct a successful season without your help, and there are many opportunities for you to do so! If you're a returning veteran...welcome back!  If you're brand new to the band and still not quite sure what you've gotten yourself into...don't worry! It's an incredibly friendly group of kids and parents, and we guarantee you'll have a blast. No experience necessary, so sign up for as many slots as you can (and bring a friend along to help!).

Details can be found right in the sign up link, and there's always more information under the Director's Updates tab on the Vanguard website. Rest assured that no matter what you sign up for, you'll always be done in plenty of time to see every parade. And the best part of helping is you get to be around this amazing group of kids during their days of rehearsal!
Thank you again for your willingness to help, and we're all looking forward to a great year!

LVW Mattress-Palooza!

2/4/2022

Hey LVW Families, Friends, Members, Alumni, Relatives - Mark Saturday, April 23 on your calendar. LVW will be holding a Mattress Sale! Money from the proceeds will be used to help buy additional uniforms for this summer, as well as needed instruments and other equipment.

More information will follow, but for now, get excited for the opportunity to support LVW but also to get that mattress replaced that you have been considering for too many years!

Please share this information with friends, relatives, neighbors, church members, or whoever else you can. The more people that attend our event and purchase a mattress (or two, or more!) the more it will benefit LVW.

Did I mention that LVW's membership will be up more than 20 marching members than we had in 2021? This will be the largest group we have had since 2011! We can't wait for summer!

Let Your Light Shine!

January 8-9 Camp Information

12/21/2021

Hello LVW Staff, Directors, Volunteers, and both past, present, and future LVW Parents and Students!
Just over two weeks until our first rehearsals at the January Camp - can you feel the excitement?

The 2022 season officially gets under way during the weekend of January 8-9. Rehearsal will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday.  We will begin in the auditorium for the welcome from the staff, opening announcements, and an overview of the two-day camp. We will conclude all our activities by 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon. Please check with your school’s director/LVW coordinator for travel plans to and from the camp.

Camp Location:
Fox Valley Lutheran HS
5300 N Meade Street
Appleton, WI 54913

If you are sure you will be marching with LVW this summer, go ahead and REGISTER for the season.  We have quite a few members already registered!  We want all members registered by February 1st, so this first weekend camp will serve as a great introduction to what LVW can be.  So if you’re not quite sure about an LVW commitment, come to the camp and experience the fellowship, friendship, and excitement of LVW!

IMPORTANT - Please RSVP for the camp, even if you are unable to attend January 8-9 but intend to participate in 2022.  A link to the RSVP is also located on the LVW homepage.

This RSVP form is intended for Returning LVW Members, Staff/Directors, New LVW Members, and Parents.

Parents – if you would like to volunteer for the camp, we have a Sign Up in a separate post on our website.  You can also access the form here – LVW January Camp Volunteer Sign Up

When you arrive at FVL
Girls can take their overnight gear to the Fine Arts Room.  Boys can take their gear to the Choir Room.  Instrument cases and other equipment can be taken to the auditorium stage
There is a basketball game at FVL on Saturday night, so after supper we will not be able to use the gyms or the Commons.

Meals
For Saturday supper, pack a BAG SUPPER.  Saturday evening snack, as well as Sunday breakfast and lunch will be provided by LVW.

Worship Service
We will be viewing the Livestream worship at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Appleton on Sunday morning. There is no need to bring extra clothes for this service.  The service begins at 8:00 AM.

What to Bring
You will need to pack an overnight bag with a change of clothes, overnight gear (Sleeping bag/blanket/pillow/air mattress/etc.), personal items (towel, soap/shampoo, deodorant, etc). We will be sleeping overnight at FVL.

For marching rehearsals, you will need to have comfortable shorts or sweats. Please don’t wear “jeans” for marching/visual rehearsals. You will also need a pair of CLEAN tennis shoes for use on the gym floor.

Don’t forget your instrument! If you will be using an LVW instrument (mellophone, baritone, tuba), you will need to bring your own mouthpiece. Reed players, please make sure you have a few working reeds for the weekend.

You will be given your music and other LVW equipment on Saturday.

Check back to this page occasionally. There may be more updates before the Camp.

Please tell your friends about this post, especially if they may be new to LVW.  We want excellent attendance at this camp!

For Returning and New Members
There is preparatory work that you can do to ensure the 2022 season kicks off strong.  Please continue to ready your bodies by exercising, stretching, and finding ways to make your muscles stronger.  Even a 1 pound flute gets heavy after holding it up for several minutes (with excellent posture!)

Practice your instrument.  Make sure your skills are at the top of their game because you will be challenged by our staff and our music as we push toward excellence.

Know someone who might be interested?  Invite them to join you, at least for this first camp.  After all, marching band is way better with a friend (not that you won't have 60 or more new friends from around the state within a few months...)

And remember the more important preparation we're all enjoying this season, the advent of the baby Jesus, God's gracious gift to us and the fulfillment of his ancient promises.  Say a prayer of thanks for the undeserved physical and spiritual blessings we receive every day, and ask God to help you find ways to use those blessings to his glory.

The LVW Staff can't wait to see you in January!

LVW Group Tickets for DCI Show at Cedarburg, Sunday, August 8

7/12/2021

Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin will be ordering tickets for The Rotary Music Festival DCI show to be held on Sunday, August 8 at Cedarburg High School! We will order the tickets and will take care of distributing them the night of the show. We want to make tickets available for anyone to attend.

This show will include the River City Rhythm, Colt Cadets, Madison Scouts, Colts, Phantom Regiment, Blue Stars, and the Cavaliers.  It begins at 7:30 PM.

Follow the link to this TICKET ORDER FORM to indicate how many tickets you would like to order for The Rotary Music Festival.  You can also click the button below.

To sit with the LVW group, you MUST complete this form by Friday, July 16 by midnight! After that time, we will not be able to add tickets for our group, as we will be ordering tickets on Saturday, July 17. You will be on your own to order tickets after that time.  We want to ensure that we will be able to get all of our tickets in the same location of the stadium, and the availability of a large section of tickets will not likely be available after that time.

This show is NOT REQUIRED for our LVW Members.  We are only doing this a a service and hope that many of our students can attend!   There is a section on the form to indicate the LVW Member name so we can track how many of our members are interested. Staff members, directors, volunteers, LVW Alumni, LVW Guests/Relatives, and everyone else can use the same form.  There is a checkbox menu to indicate your relationships to LVW.

Please be aware that there are no group ticket discounts offered for this show.  We will be ordering tickets in the $20 section.  There is also a $5.95 processing fee for each ticket ordered.  So, to make it easy, we will charge $26 for each ticket ordered.

You may certainly order more expensive tickets if you wish!  The "better seats" range from $30 - $40 per ticket.  If you would like those premium seats, you are on your own and cannot use the LVW order form.

We will collect money and distribute the tickets on the night of the show.  You can also mail a check, made out to "Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin" ahead of time if you wish.  Please indicate "DCI Tickets" on the memo.  If mailing a check, please make sure that the check arrives at FVL NO LATER than Thursday, August 5.  Mail checks to Fox Valley Lutheran HS, C/O James Neujahr, 5300 N Meade Street, Appleton, WI 54913.

If paying the night of the show, it will be best to have the exact amount, as Mr. Neujahr will not be able to make change.  You can also pay by check that night if you wish, made out as indicated above.

LVW will have the tickets for the show in our possession. Mr. Neujahr will be near the entrance gate to the stadium starting at 6:30 PM.  You will receive your tickets when you pay for them.

LVW will not be arranging transportation to this show.  Everyone will be on their own to get to the stadium.  It would be a good idea to arrange for a carpool to save on Parking.  It is also more fun to travel with your LVW Family Members!

If you have questions contact James Neujahr at jneujahr@fvlhs.org.

For more details about the show, or to order tickets on your own, you can visit the DCI Website.

Please be aware that, in the event of a weather cancellation, LVW and DCI cannot refund your ticket money.  If we order tickets for you, you will be responsible for the FULL AMOUNT of tickets ordered.

LVW Picnic - Family Member Sign Up Form

6/30/2021

LVW will end its 2021 "Return to the Streets" season with a family-style picnic following the parade in Racine.  We would like to invite any family members that can attend.  Following are a few details for the afternoon.

After the parade, the band will return to Shoreland Lutheran HS to change, shower, pack up and load.  They will not be returning to Shoreland once they leave.

The band will then go to Petrifying Springs Park - Area 3, located at 5555 7th St, Kenosha, WI 53144.  We have reserved this shelter for our final meal.  It is only a short drive from the school.  We hope to arrive there between 1:30 and 1:45 PM.  We hope to serve the meal at approximately 2:00 PM.

Mr. Wordell has arranged for Trolley Dogs of Kenosha to provide some of the food for the picnic.  LVW will provide chips, beverages, veggies, and fruit.  Trolley Dogs will not serve family members early if you arrive at the park before the band arrives, so enjoy some quiet time as you wait for the band.

Trolley Dogs is most famous for their Chicago Style Hot Dogs.  All of their hot dogs are Fresh Vienna JUMBO Dogs!  For our picnic, they will serve them on a bun, and will provide the toppings for the traditional Chicago Dog that you will be able to put on yourself.  Those toppings include Mustard, Tomato, Relish, Onion, Pickle, Sport Peppers, and Celery Salt.

LVW will pay for the members, directors, and volunteers that are with the band that day.  All other family members will need to pay for their Trolley Dogs, which are $5 each, which includes tax.  (The rest of the meal will be provided by LVW as mentioned above)  Please bring CASH ONLY for the dogs.  They will not have the ability to do credit card transactions at the shelter.

So that we can give LVW and Trolley Dogs an estimate of the number of people to plan for, please complete this form.  For planning purposes, we would like the form completed by Noon on Friday, July 2.

DO NOT include LVW staff, directors, volunteers for the day, or LVW members in your total.  We are already counting them!

Mr. Wordell has provided a map of the Kenosha Harbor area for our free time on July 4.  Most of these are restaurants and food trucks.  You can see that everything is within a few blocks.  Also listed is the bus drop off area, the carnival rides, and the bridge to the beach where we will be viewing the fireworks.

Schedules and Information for July 2-5 - KML Rehearsal Camp; 3 Parades

Congratulations again to everyone who helped to make this past weekend an enormous success!  From Directors and staff, to volunteers and cooks, to the members themselves - well done!

Although I (Mr. Neujahr) was not with the band this past weekend, I almost felt as though I was there due to the many Facebook and Instagram posts. Thanks to Mr. Wordell, Miss Scharf, and Mrs. Nolte for their contributions to our media presence.

Our volunteer staff is second to none!  This group of dedicated parents - many of whom are new volunteers this year - have continued to support the band as cooks, servers, chaperons, truck drivers, doctors and nurses, uniform custodians, and the list goes on and on.

Thanks again to Pizza Pros (saxophone Keely Adrian's family pizza business) for serving up some of the best homemade pizza on the planet!  These fresh-made pizzas are beginning to be a sort of tradition, as they have served on two different weekends so far, and another meal this coming week at KML.

Thanks to our directors for the amazing work with the band.  They continue to add more visual and musical elements to our parade program, and their creativity and instruction is certainly helping the band to grow as a performing ensemble.

And of course we offer thanks to our amazing members!  They continue to grow as musicians, and have once again become "crowd favorites" wherever they perform.  Whether it is in a standstill performance (in the rain, no less!) or marching down the street playing beautiful music and high-fiving the spectators along the parade route, these kids know how to put on a show.  Probably most important is the fact that they have become a much closer family of young Christians, who no matter what they are doing continue to "Let Their Light Shine".  You are awesome!

KML Rehearsal Camp and July 4-5 Parades

It doesn't seem possible, but this coming weekend will be the end of our 2021 "Return to the Streets" season.  This year's edition of Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin has been short but sweet, but at the same time has been an incredible few weeks!  We will complete our summer with a two-day rehearsal camp at KML, followed by Independence Day Parades in West Bend, Somers, and Racine.

What to Bring and Pack
Students should remember to pack everything needed for four days of camp.  The packing list from Camp #1 will be a good reference for this week as well.

Students should also make sure to take care of themselves before this coming weekend.  Members should remember to drink plenty of water so they can be fully hydrated.  This final weekend for LVW will see temperatures in the 70s and 80s, with a slight chance of rain each day.

Of special importance - Don't forget to bring the following:
  • Sunscreen (at least SPF 30 or higher)
  • Hat and Sunglasses
  • Large water jug
  • Seasonal T-Shirt - you will want to wear your shirt for free-time planned in Kenosha following the Somers Parade.
  • Uniform Items - black shoes, socks, long sleeve compression shirt, guard undergarments - Two Parades on Sunday and our final parade on Monday!
Meals for this weekend
Directors, Staff, and Members should PACK A LUNCH FOR THE NOON MEAL ON FRIDAY.  Also, everyone will need to bring money for free time and a supper "On Your Own" on Sunday evening.  More on that later in this Update.  All other meals will be provided by LVW.

Worship Service this Weekend
LVW will be viewing a Livestream of a church service on Saturday evening.  There is no need to bring special clothing for this service.

End of the 2021 LVW Season!  Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow!

July 4 Free Time and Activities

LVW is very much looking forward to celebrating America’s 245th Birthday!  Mr. Wordell has once again planned out some great fun for the LVW family.

We will be spending several hours on the Kenosha Lakefront/Harbor area.  It will include a meal “On Your Own” for supper, as well as an amazing firework show.

There are several food options in the area.  Look for an update in the coming days with a listing of places to eat.  Plan on eating either at a restaurant or choose from several food trucks/booths.  Most of these eateries will be open until 9:00 PM that night.

There will be a Carnival in the area!  It will be very close to all of the other activities.  It will be located in the parking lot on 6th Avenue between 54th and 56th Street.  There will be amusements and rides available.  So if a carnival is your thing, bring some money to spend and have some fun!

Kenosha is known to have one of the best fireworks shows in the Midwest!  They will be launched right on the Lake Michigan beach, with beautiful viewing along the lake. Since the long range forecast is for highs only in the 70's on Sunday, Mr. Wordell is suggesting that we bring of blankets, jackets, and skeeter spray (after all the rain the past few weeks).  The show is scheduled to begin at about 9:30 PM.  We will designate a meeting spot, so all LVW members will need to be there before 9:30 so we can take attendance before the fireworks begin.

July 5 End-Of-Year Picnic
Final plans are still in the works, but we will be having this picnic at the Petrifying Springs Park - Area 3, located at 5555 7th St, Kenosha, WI 53144.  LVW members, staff, and volunteers from the day will be eating this meal for free, but we would also like to invite family members.  If that plan works out, there will be a Google Form to fill out so that we have an idea of how many people to plan for.  Additional family members will need to pay for their meal.  At this time, it will either be a cook-out meal, or possibly we can arrange for one of Kenosha's famous food trucks to provide the meal.

Watch for that Google Form!  It will be sent via email to all families.  The information will include meal options, as well as a pricing information.

Checkout Procedures for Monday, July 5:
If you are going to be picked up following the Racine 4th Fest Parade, and are not traveling home with LVW, the following procedures MUST be followed:

1.  Your parents can pick you up following the final meal/picnic. If you pick up your child after the meal, please pick up your child at Petrifying Springs Park - Area 3, located at 5555 7th St, Kenosha, WI 53144.  This is the park shelter where we will be serving our final meal for the season. Here is a Map showing the Location of the Park.

Please be aware, if you are picking up your child, you must be there before the band is ready to leave. If you are not there when the band is ready to leave, your child will come with the band to the various drop off locations and you can pick them up at those locations.

2.  Your parents must check you out with the attendance chaperon from your bus. This must be done with you and your parent present.

3.   If your parents are not there when the band is ready to leave, you will come with us. We leave no one behind – EVER!

Schedules and Information for June 25 - 27 - Shoreland and Kenosha

6/22/2021

Thanks to all who were able to attend our "Dress Performance" this past weekend!  About 100 or more spectators were there to take in the event.  Even though we moved inside due to the rain (which was needed anyway!), the day served the purpose well.  Parents, siblings, grandparents, and other friends and relatives were able to watch warm ups and listen to our music.  Lots of pictures and video were taken as well.  Thanks for helping to make the day special for our Lutheran Vanguard members, staff, and volunteers!

More thanks also go out to our volunteers who assisted with meals, overnight chaperons, uniforms, and so on!  Believe me - our kids and staff are WELL FED!  A very large thank you to both Tony and Holly Kubek for the tremendous amount of time they are giving to the band.  You are amazing!

Shoreland and Kenosha Weekend - June 25-27
The band will be rehearsing at Shoreland LHS on Friday and Saturday, and will be participating in the Kenosha Civic Veterans Parade on Sunday.

Keith Wordell (Band Director at Shoreland) is making every effort to make sure our stay at Shoreland is filled with fun, food, and festivities!  He has communicated with the folks at the Kenosha Harbor Market and set up two standstill performances on Saturday morning!  After our performances, the band members, staff, and volunteers will have the opportunity to spend some free time at the Harbor Market.  Go to the link to find out more about what you can do and see while there.  There are over 130 vendors with everything from fresh produce, arts and crafts, prepared food, processed foods, and unique retail.

The band members will have about an hour and a half to enjoy the Market.  So the kids should bring some spending money.  This will also be a meal "On Your Own", so the kids should have about $10 or so for their lunch.  It is hard to suggest an amount, but that would be sufficient for a meal from the various food vendors on site.

What to Bring and Pack
Students should remember to pack everything needed for three days of camp.  The packing list from Camp #1 will be a good reference for this week as well.

Students should also make sure to take care of themselves before this coming weekend.  They were instructed to drink plenty of water so they can be fully hydrated.  This past weekend was fairly nice, and this coming weekend looks to be in the 70s.  We may also see some rain, but hopefully the weather will be beautiful for Sunday's parade.

Of special importance - Don't forget to bring the following:
  • Sunscreen (at least SPF 30 or higher)
  • Hat and Sunglasses
  • Large water jug
  • Seasonal T-Shirt for performances at the Harbor Market on Saturday.  Shorts and tennis shoes.
  • Uniform Items - black shoes, socks, long sleeve compression shirt, guard undergarments - Parade on Sunday!

Worship Service
LVW will be viewing a Livestream of an area church service on Sunday morning.  There is no need to bring special clothing for this service.

Meals for this weekend
Directors, Staff, and Members should PACK A LUNCH FOR THE NOON MEAL ON FRIDAY.  Also, everyone will need to bring money for lunch "On Your Own" on Saturday for lunch at the Harbor Market.  All other meals will be provided by LVW.

Kenosha Civic Veterans Parade
"A Centennial Celebration: Women's Right to Vote" is the theme for the 2021 Kenosha Civic Veterans Parade, presented by Snap-on.  This parade has a beautiful route through the east side of Kenosha, and will be approximately 2 miles in length.

Here is a Parade Route Map

Here is a Parade Line Up
